SSL Certificate Buyer's Guide: Choosing the Right Package for Your Website

Deciding on the perfect SSL certificate package might feel overwhelming initially, with terms like Standard, Premium, DVs, EVs, and Wildcard floating around. However, it all boils down to a few straightforward questions. In this guide, you’ll gain insight into what an SSL Certificate signifies for your website and discover the ideal one that suits your needs.

Understanding the Implications of Your Website's SSL Certificate

When visitors land on your website, it’s crucial to create a sense of security and trust. The presence of the lock pad icon in the browser bar assures them that your site has been verified and can be trusted.

Most browsers now require websites to have an SSL Certificate; otherwise, they display a “Not Secure” warning at the top of the address bar, which can deter potential visitors.

All our Standard SSL certificates provide your website with a Domain Validated (DV) Certificate, indicating that you are a verified entity.

However, for enhanced customer reassurance, you may consider our Premium SSL packages, which include an Extended Validation (EV) Certificate.

An EV Certificate appears differently in the visitor’s browser. Instead of only seeing a lock pad, they will also view your business name and the country it operates in.

Obtaining an EV Certificate involves additional requirements, such as providing a letter from a certified public accountant (CPA) or a legal opinion letter confirming your status as a government organization.

It’s worth noting that claims made by other SSL Registry websites about the browser address bar turning green with an EV Certificate are outdated. While some browsers still display a green lock pad, Chrome, and others have removed color differentiation. Moreover, most general users are unaware of the significance of the green bar.

In reality, many prominent websites like Facebook, Amazon, and Reddit opt for a regular DV Certificate, and so do we.

If part of your business’s main selling point is that you’re the most credible, trustworthy business around, you may want to think about an EV. Otherwise, a regular DV will allow you to purchase an SSL cheap while still giving you all the great benefits.

For more detailed information about SSL Certificates, please refer to our comprehensive Website Security Guide.

Selecting the Right SSL Certificate

Choosing the appropriate SSL certificate is a straightforward process, but it requires some consideration. If you need to secure 2-5 websites, our 5-site Standard or Premium Packages are ideal (the choice between the two depends on whether you prefer DV or EV). It’s that simple.

However, if you only need to protect a single site, don’t rush to select the 1-site certificate just yet. You may require the wildcard certificate.

Why Choose the Wildcard Package?

It’s simple: If your website has subdomains, the wildcard certificate is necessary as it covers all subdomains.

What exactly is a subdomain? For a detailed explanation, refer to our Domain Names 101 tutorial.

In a nutshell, think of domains as reading from right to left. The Top Level Domain (TLD) is the rightmost part, such as .com, .org, .net, etc.

Next comes the second-level domain, like “Cheap-Domain Registration” in Cheap-DomainRegistration.com. And “www.” is an example of a subdomain.

However, your website can have other subdomains too. For instance, if you have an online store, you might have a page with the address store.mywebsite.com.

Similarly, if you operate a tourism website, you might have a page called visit.myvacation.com.

In these examples, “store” and “visit” are the subdomains.

So, does your website have multiple subdomains? If yes, you’ll need the wildcard SSL certificate.

If not, you can choose between the 1-site Standard or Premium SSL packages, depending on whether you prefer DV or EV.

That’s all there is to it! This covers everything you need to know when it comes to selecting an SSL Package!
